Psalms 119 5

PSALMS 119:5

O that my ways were directed to keep thy statutes!

Here in this verse I hear David’s heart cry. He knows that God has commanded us to keep his commandments. He knows that he has not done this, and his heart is for God to direct him to keep them. He has a love for God’s word and God’s precepts and statutes. We can see this undeniably throughout psalms 119. He longs to keep them for he loves God. When he does not keep them he is grieved deeply (Psalms 51:10).

David’s desire here has been answered to us that are in Christ. David did not have the Holy Spirit indwelling him like we do (1 Cor 6:19). He was not made a new creature like we are (2 cor 5:17). So his prayer and his desire have been answered for us in Christ. We have the Holy Ghost who will direct our path (John 14:26), and chastise and corrects us if we fall off the path of righteousness ( Heb 12:5-11).

Today we have that direction in the Holy Spirit. But we still need to prayerfully seek God and ask him to guide us for His will in our lives. To gives us the boldness to proclaim His word and to live it.

We have to examine our lives to His word and repent when we are wrong and he will give us the power to live it through His grace that is in our lives.

2 Cor 13:5

Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?

1 Cor 11:27-32

Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.

We are commanded to examine ourselves, to judge ourselves, and in doing this we will find where we error. Then God’s grace will help us to get back on track and strengthen us to live for Him, turning from our error. This is why it is so important for us as followers of the Most High God, to read and study His word daily.

With the Holy Ghost in our lives, and we being His temple, we now have the direction we need to keep the statutes of God. God has answered David’s desire through Christ and His crucifixion. This is what David wanted to see in his life, and we now have it.  Jesus Christ gave us the Holy Spirit just for that purpose. Praise God in the Highest.

John 14:26

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

  1. hey there, in response to this blog I thought rather than reinvent the wheel, I would direct you to an article written by scholar that is a favorite of ours. I think he does an excellent job of stating my concerns which I expressed to you in regard to the working of the Holy Spirit in the lives of “old testament” saints vs. “new testament” saints.

    1. Good choice, Grace!
I thought of the same article, so I’m glad you shared it, as I was “out” with the flu.
But now that Abba has “restored me to the land of the living”, let me say that one point in that article that is very pertinent to this discussion is the need to define “love” Biblically.
Most genuine Believers recognize that there is more to REAL love than mere emotion, or whatever else our cultural view of it may be. What that “more” is, is not often taught.
This article Grace posts may be a long read, but contains many “nuggets” well worth “digging for”, including this definition of LOVE.
May Abba open all our eyes, as we seek Him in Truth!
