Keeping from Sin Psalms 119:11

Ps 119:11
Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
KJV

We need to remember verse 10. The psalmist asked God to help him not wander from God’s commandments. This I find to be a very Good prayer. We know God will accomplish this thing we ask. Now the problem that I find, is that if we stop there, then things most likely will not happen and we will wander away. After praying that prayer what we need to do is exactly what the psalmist proclaimed. “Thy word have I hid in mine heart”

Have you been wondering why you stray away from God. Have you wondered why it seems to feel so hard to not sin, or to get lead astray by temptation so easily. Have you wondered why depression takes over, and or you just have no will to serve God, but yet you desire to. If this is you, then I suspect you do not hide God’s word in your heart. This verse tells us how important the word of God is to a Christians life. If you take away the word, then you have taken away your sword, and you will lose every fight that comes against you.

This verse tells us that the psalmist has hid God’s word in his heart so that he will not sin against God. Lets look at other verses in the bible

Ps 37:31 The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide. KJV

Ps 40:8 I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart. KJV

Prov 2:10-11 When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;11 Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee: KJV

Jer 15:16 Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O Lord God of hosts. KJV

We can see there is definite fruit from hiding God’s word in our hearts. When we do this and meditate on them, it will grow with in us like a tree planted by the water, where the roots will grow strong, as in psalms 1.  Col 2:7 tells us the we need to be rooted in Him (Jesus). The only way this can happen is by the word of God. If we are left to our own devices and ignore the word of God, we will start to take on beliefs that are not biblical. We will conform to what we find right in our own eyes, and eventually even fight against the principles and truths of God’s word out of ignorance.

If you want to live a victorious life, living for God to the fullest. then I encourage you, pick up His, word and hide it in your heart. Do this daily as if you are feeding your body, for the word of God is the food for your soul. Do not starve it. For revival only comes in His word.

psalms 119:9

Ps 119:9
Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word.
KJV

This is a very encouraging scripture to me. As Christians we all have a starting point. We all trusted in Jesus Christ as the sacrifice for our sins. We trusted that God’s wrath for every wrong we have done was poured out upon Him. We repented of our sins and started on a path with God. But there is one problem. Yes we became born again, Yes we became the temple of the Holy ghost, Yes we became a child of God, Yes we were transferred from the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light. No our mind did not forget the path we were on. We remember our sins, we remember, our former life, we still had thoughts and morals that were not in line with the bible.

So the big question, how do I change and become more like Jesus. This scripture has the answer. By taking heed according to thy word. What does that mean? It means if we have morals, ideas, or lifestyles that are contrary to God’s word then we are wrong and the bible is right. We need to repent and fall in line with what the word teaches. The word of God is our sure anchor that never moves.

Now I remember when I was being discipled  by a man of God that influenced my life greatly, there was an encounter that happened. I remember I was with him when a young man came up to him and was excited. He was excited for what God promised in the sermon that was spoken. I new this young man as he was a friend of mine, but his life was still messed up as mine was. This man of God asked to see his bible. As he flipped through it, he said to the young man, you have many scriptures underlined. The young man said, yes he likes to go through the bible and underline scriptures that are relevant to him. Now this man of God showed me the scriptures through out the bible underlined and gave the bible back. He then took me out to Tim Horton’s. What he then did was open His bible, and started to explain to me about the young man who had a messed up life. All the scriptures he had underlined were scripture of blessings and promises. He then showed me his underlines. They were scriptures like, ” do not gossip”, “we must forgive”, “if you look at a woman to lust you committed adultery in your heart”. He went on to explain that we need to look at the hard scriptures that cut into our lives and repent when our lives do not meet what the bible says. This is the only way when change comes. Our minds become renewed and transformed, the sword of the Spirit cuts into us, and changes us. We then start to grow and mature. He told me that the promises of God will come, we do not focus on those but focus on how to live for Christ. Denying ourselves, dieing to ourselves, living the hard scriptures, with the help from the Holy Ghost.

This was over 20 years ago that this happened and I still remember it today, and many other meetings with this Man of God. Ask me what sermon I heard 20 years ago I could not tell you. This is why Jesus said to make disciples, we need to pour our lives into others and direct them in the word of God so they can wield it themselves correctly and not deceitfully. In doing this, they will cleans their ways and grow in holiness.
